{"id":15113,"date":"2019-04-16T06:35:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T06:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/?p=15113"},"modified":"2026-04-24T11:31:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T11:31:07","slug":"neurodiversity-what-is-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/neurodiversity-what-is-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Neurodiversity\u2026 what is it?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 200%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 35px; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Let me start by telling you what \u2018neurotypical\u2019 is first.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 200%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 35px; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Well it\u2019s an adjective to start with\u2026 so it\u2019s a describing word.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">This is from my MAC computer\u2019s dictionary:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; background: #cae9f5; width: 100%; margin: 20px auto; line-height: 1.3; text-align: left; padding: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><p style=\"font-size: 160%; color: #338ccd;\">The meaning of Neurotypical is\u2026 Not displayed or characterised by autistic or other neurologically atypical patterns of thought or behaviour.<\/p>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><p style=\"font-size: 160%;\">Along with autism, I\u2019m going to include; dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and specific language impairment.<\/p>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><p style=\"font-size: 160%; color: #338ccd;\">Neurotypical individuals often assume that their experience of the world is either the only one or the only correct one.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/center>\n\n\n\n<center><div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; background: #cae9f5; width: 100%; margin: 20px auto; line-height: 1.3; text-align: left; padding: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><p style=\"font-size: 160%; color: #338ccd;\">Coined in the 1990s by the autism movement, the word \u2018neurodiversity\u2019 is a noun.<\/p>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><p style=\"font-size: 160%; color: #338ccd;\">It describes the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioural traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">I love the use of the word \u2018normal\u2019. What is normal and who is normal anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">Reflecting on this\u2026 it&#8217;s making me think that a majority of our teachers are neurotypical\u2026 and that creates a problem\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">Because many of their students are neurodiverse.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">Without even realising it, I have spent my life surrounded by neurodiverse people. I have three children who were diagnosed with dyslexia early on and many family members who have similar traits. I myself definitely have traits of dyscalculia.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">My desire to see my intelligent neurodiverse children thrive in a formal school setting has set me on a journey to help not only my children but thousands of others too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 160%; font-family: Arial;\">It is without a doubt that we need neurodiverse individuals.
