Irlen Syndrome is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain&#8217;s ability to process visual information. This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by other standardized educational or medical tests\n<p>Irlen Syndrome can affect many different areas, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic and work performance<\/li>\n<li>Behavior<\/li>\n<li>Attention<\/li>\n<li>Ability to sit still<\/li>\n<li>Concentration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This problem can manifest itself differently for each individual. This problem is not remediable and is often a lifetime barrier to learning and performance. If you suffer from any of the following, Irlen Syndrome might be your problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Print looks different<\/li>\n<li>Environment looks different<\/li>\n<li>Slow or inefficient reading<\/li>\n<li>Poor comprehension<\/li>\n<li>Eye strain<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with math computation<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty copying<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty reading music<\/li>\n<li>Poor sports performance<\/li>\n<li>Poor depth-perception<\/li>\n<li>Low motivation<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Symptoms of Irlen Syndrome<\/h3>\n<p><b>Light Sensitivity<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bothered by glare, fluorescent lights, bright lights, sunlight and sometimes lights at night<\/li>\n<li>Some individuals experience physical symptoms and feel tired, sleepy, dizzy, anxious, or irritable. Others experience headaches, mood changes, restlessness or have difficulty staying focused, especially with bright or fluorescent lights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reading Problems<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor comprehension<\/li>\n<li>Misreads words<\/li>\n<li>Problems tracking from line to line<\/li>\n<li>Reads in dim light<\/li>\n<li>Skips words or lines<\/li>\n<li>Reads slowly or hesitantly<\/li>\n<li>Takes breaks<\/li>\n<li>Loses place<\/li>\n<li>Avoids reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Discomfort<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strain and fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Tired or sleepy<\/li>\n<li>Headaches or nausea<\/li>\n<li>Fidgety or restless<\/li>\n<li>Eyes that hurt or become watery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Attention and Concentration Problems<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Problems with concentration when reading and doing academic tasks<\/li>\n<li>Often people can appear to have other conditions, such as attention deficit disorder, and are given medication unnecessarily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Writing Problems:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trouble copying<\/li>\n<li>Unequal spacing<\/li>\n<li>Unequal letter size<\/li>\n<li>Writing up or downhill<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistent spelling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other Characteristics:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strain or fatigue from computer use<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty reading music<\/li>\n<li>Sloppy, careless math errors<\/li>\n<li>Misaligned numbers in columns<\/li>\n<li>Ineffective use of study time<\/li>\n<li>Lack of motivation<\/li>\n<li>Grades do not reflect the amount of effort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Depth Perception:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clumsiness<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty catching balls<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty judging distances<\/li>\n<li>Additional caution necessary while driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Distortions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Words on the page lack clarity or stability; i.e., may appear to be blurry, moving, or disappear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><center><b>Copyright \u00a9 1998 Perceptual Development Corp\/Helen Irlen.
