Help your child to learn these by sight and they will be well on their way to reading a quarter of all the text on a page. This will provide them with a great head start when school starts back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here\u2019s what you will need:<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Flashcards of 152 of the most used words<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thetenminutetutor.com\/free-teaching-and-learning-worksheets\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Download those here<\/u><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, print them out and cut them up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <span style=\"color: #008000;\">checklist<\/span> of the words so you can mark off the ones that your student has mastered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thetenminutetutor.com\/free-teaching-and-learning-worksheets\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Download that here<\/u><\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">envelopes<\/span> for each set of flashcards, a <span style=\"color: #008000;\">pencil<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #008000;\">pen<\/span> \u2013 Get those from your home office or your local retail outlet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Here&#8217;s what to do:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Put<strong> each set of words<\/strong> from each sheet in order in a <strong>separate envelope<\/strong>. Number the envelope in order from the easiest to the hardest words. Start with the Number 1 and so on\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Start your student with the<strong> 5 easiest<\/strong> words first \u2013 Put these<strong> 5 flashcards<\/strong> in an envelope marked with the word <strong>\u2018Learning\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On a second envelope write the word <strong>\u2018Mastered\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now your student must be able to recognise each word 5 times \u2018by sight\u2019 on 5 separate occasions (with at least an hour between each session) before the word can be relocated to the mastered envelope. You can indicate each success on the back of each sight word flashcard with a separate tick.<\/li>\n<li>Once a word has 5 ticks on the back replace it with a new word in the \u2018Learning\u2019 envelope for the next sight word session. Your student should only be learning 5 words at a time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6905 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P8120013-2.jpg\" alt=\"P8120013 (2)\" width=\"341\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P8120013-2.jpg 894w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P8120013-2-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P8120013-2-150x147.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/P8120013-2-80x80.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/>Note for Parents:<\/strong> Recognising a word by sight should take no longer than about 3 seconds. It is not about using phonics to sound a word out, but having a memory strategy to recognise a word by sight almost instantly. If you child cannot do this, and some can\u2019t, because they do not have a good sight memory, then use coloured highlighters to chunk words, slashes for syllables or the like to provide them with a visual cue they can use to help them to remember a word for the future.\u00a0 The idea is to provide a \u2018bridge of support\u2019 when an activity proves too difficult for them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Your children will love to have one-on-one time with you regardless of the activity.
