It\u2019s Liz Dunoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; color: #31849b; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Today I\u2019m going to be showing you how to teach your child to read using phonics and the 26 consonant sounds and how you can use this information to teach your child to read from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">My three children all experienced learning difficulties when they were younger and I helped them to catch up at school and have great success. Well\u2026 consonant are all those letters in the English language that are not vowels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Here they are;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 140%;\">B C D F G H J K L M N P<br \/>\nQ R S T V W X Y Z<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">There are 21 consonants in the English language and 26 consonant sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Linguists put these sounds into groups based on the way that we pronounce them <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Plosives<\/strong> &#8211; Are like a little stop or explosion \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">puh<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">buh<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">tuh<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">duh<\/span>\u201d,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">cuh<\/span>\u201d &amp; \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">guh<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Nasals<\/strong> \u2013 Are made through the nose \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">nnn<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">mmm<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #993366;\">n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">g<\/span><\/span>\u2019. You can\u2019t say nasals if your nose is blocked. This makes talking difficult when you have a head cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Affricates<\/strong> &#8211; are a stop with a vibration \u2013 \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ch<\/span>\u201d, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">juh<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Lateral<\/strong> \u2013 Air flows past the tongue \u2013 \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">lll<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Glides<\/strong> \u2013 Go smoothly from one sound to another \u2013 \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">rrr<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">wuh<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">yuh<\/span>\u201d&amp; \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">huh<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">And <strong>consonant combinations<\/strong> are just that\u2026 a combination<br \/>\nof sounds \u2013 \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ks<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">gz<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Fricatives<\/strong> are vibrations &#8211; \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">thhh<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">th<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">sss<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">zzz<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">shh<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">zh<\/span>\u201d &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">fff<\/span>\u201d \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">vvv<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Now let me give you a word for each to explain them further.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Plosive<\/strong> <strong>sounds<\/strong> first.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 130%; padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Puh<\/span>\u201d for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>p<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">e<\/span>n<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 130%; padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Wuh<\/span>\u201d for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>w<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">e<\/span>b<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 130%;
