{"id":9000,"date":"2017-06-09T11:00:16","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T11:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/?p=9000"},"modified":"2026-03-30T08:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T08:42:41","slug":"7-things-learnt-orton-gillingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/7-things-learnt-orton-gillingham\/","title":{"rendered":"7 things I have learnt about Orton-Gillingham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 140%; color: #31849b; font-family: Roboto;\">Last week I did an Orton-Gillingham Foundation course with the amazing Canadian, Corey Zylstra as our facilitator.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 140%; color: #31849b; font-family: Roboto;\">Here is 7 things I learnt about Orton-Gillingham under her amazing tutorage.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 261 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Orthography<\/strong> is the written system of spelling patterns and correspondences between speech and print.<br \/>\n<i>Note:<\/i> Not be confused with Ornithology which is bird watching.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1.5 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>Rime<\/strong> and <strong>Rhyme<\/strong> are different. \u2018Rime\u2019 is the vowel and all that follows it in a monosyllabic word (a word with one syllable) e.g. bag, swish. \u2018Rhyme\u2019 is all about words that rhyme like; hop, pop and stop.<\/li>\n<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/classroom-658002_1920.jpg\" alt=\"classroom-658002_1920\" width=\"350\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/classroom-658002_1920.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/classroom-658002_1920-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/classroom-658002_1920-1024x692.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/classroom-658002_1920-150x101.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\">Orton and Gillingham were the ultimate advocates for educational support, setting up displays in community halls and public places where people who were struggling with literacy could come and learn about learning difficulties and phonology.<\/li>\n<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1.5 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>RTI<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Response To Intervention<\/strong> is standard practice across the United States, most of Scotland and England. RTI refers to the process whereby local education agencies (aka. schools) document a child\u2019s response to scientific, research based intervention using a tiered approach. RTI provides early intervention for students experiencing difficulty learning to read. RTI was authorised for use in the United States as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). C\u2019mon Australia \u2013 it\u2019s time we caught up.<\/li>\n<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/homework-1815899_1920-e1497002583791.jpg\" alt=\"homework-1815899_1920\" width=\"200\"  class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9031\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/homework-1815899_1920-e1497002583791.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/homework-1815899_1920-e1497002583791-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/homework-1815899_1920-e1497002583791-695x1024.jpg 695w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/homework-1815899_1920-e1497002583791-102x150.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1012px) 100vw, 1012px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1.5 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\"><strong>If your child can\u2019t <u>say<\/u><\/strong> \u201chairbrush&#8221; without the \/hair\/, \u201ckeyboard\u201d without the \/key\/, \u201cmeat&#8221; without the \/m\/, \u201ccat\u201d without the \/c\/ and \u201cflap\u201d without the \/f\/ &#8211; you may want to consider looking at a program for them that is based in Orton-Gillingham.<\/li>\n<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1.5 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\">The word <strong>\u2018diphthong\u2019<\/strong> is rarely said correctly. The correct pronunciation is &#8211; dip-ff-thong. It means two vowels sounds that glide from one sound to another. Google it to find some examples.<\/li>\n<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 30px; line-height: 1.5 !important;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 130%;\">When you do an Orton-Gillingham course, which of course you should, especially if you are a dedicated teacher, tutor or learning support specialist, make sure it is an <strong>accredited course<\/strong>. Corey\u2019s course is accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy of USA, the Canadian Orton-Gillingham Academy, The international Dyslexia Association, ALTA and IMSLIC.
