{"id":9737,"date":"2017-10-11T08:50:34","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T08:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/?p=9737"},"modified":"2026-04-27T05:18:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T05:18:32","slug":"jack-harley-walsh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/jack-harley-walsh\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Harley-Walsh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Jack4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><strong><span style=\"font-size: 200%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 32px; color: #3366ff; \">A DYSLEXIC teenager who was turned away from 30 schools has started his dream course at university.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 200%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 32px; color:#555555; \">Jack Harley-Walsh first made headlines when he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for charity at the age of ten.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">A year later he faced the even bigger obstacle of getting into a school, with 30 secondaries across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey saying no due to Jack&#8217;s high levels of special needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">The 18 year-old has dyslexia and dyscalculia, a combination that makes reading, writing and numeracy based learning particularly difficult, and at 11 years-old little potential of a long career in education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">After winning a place at St David&#8217;s College in North Wales however, the south Ascot resident excelled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">The school&#8217;s specialist techniques and dyslexia focused teaching helped Jack to a strong set of GCSEs in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/jack2.jpg\" alt=\"jack2\" width=\"615\" height=\"432\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9741\" padding-bottom=\"15px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/jack2.jpg 615w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/jack2-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/jack2-150x105.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">At the time he told The News: &#8220;I just wanted the results to make me feel proud of myself and for my teachers to be rewarded. I&#8217;ve now got a big smile and lots of goosebumps.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been tough living away from home to get this education but it is what I needed if I wanted to become an engineer and fly for the RAF.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">Two years later and Jack&#8217;s ambitions are still very much alive after he scooped a B in design and technology A Level, distinctions in science and production design BTECS and a place at Swansea University to study automotive design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">&#8220;It is a tremendous achievement for him and his teachers,&#8221; explained mum Sue Walsh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/22359152_10211923656384466_1290625919_n.jpg\" alt=\"22359152_10211923656384466_1290625919_n\" width=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/22359152_10211923656384466_1290625919_n.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/22359152_10211923656384466_1290625919_n-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/22359152_10211923656384466_1290625919_n-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">&#8220;To do his GCSEs was extraordinary. To get his A Levels and get to university is totally phenomenal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">&#8220;He has ruined the family tradition though, because none of us went to university.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">In October 2015 Jack was featured in an ITV documentary in which he opened his GCSE results on camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial;\">He said: &#8220;I was the educational train wreck, no school wanted me, no teacher could teach me, even I didn&#8217;t want to be me.
