The South Cumbria Dyslexia Association and the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) surveyed dyslexic pupils about how teachers made learning easy or difficult.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 180%; font-family: Arial;\">Some of the dyslexic pupil\u2019s comments are listed below.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\">At the start of the lesson <strong>be clear<\/strong> about what you want us to do.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\">Don\u2019t give too many instructions <strong>too fast<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Show us how to do something as well as tell us<\/strong>. Use pictures and structural material \u2013 these make it easier to understand.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Be prepared<\/strong> to repeat the instructions.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Teach the basic information<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018without rambling on about other things\u2019.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Show enthusiasm<\/strong> for the subject.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Let us ask questions<\/strong> \u2013 check that we are doing it right.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Proactively check<\/strong> if we are doing it right.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Smile<\/strong> <strong>when we ask for help<\/strong> \u2013 explain it again and do at least two examples with us.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Write things neatly and clearly<\/strong> \u2013 preferably on a whiteboard.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Leave instructions\/spellings etc. on the board<\/strong> for a long time.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Help<\/strong> when we get stuck.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Be patient<\/strong> with our mistakes and when we need help.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Be nice to us<\/strong> \u2013 please do not shout when we get it wrong.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Number lines at both ends<\/strong> \u2013 different coloured lines can also be helpful.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Prepare notes<\/strong> to minimise copying from the whiteboard.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\">Put homework instructions in an<strong> audio file or on a website<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Accept and encourage work to be presented in different forms<\/strong> &#8211; audio, web cam, oral responses etc. \u201cYou choose the best way to show me what you know for this task\u201d.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; line-height: 30px;\"><strong>Create a peaceful environment<\/strong> in the class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com_.jpg\" alt=\"girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com\" width=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com_.jpg 2040w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com_-300x95.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com_-1024x323.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dyslexiadaily.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/girl-recreation-youth-student-leisure-smile-642546-pxhere.com_-150x47.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2040px) 100vw, 2040px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 0px solid #666; padding: 15px; background: #F0F0F0; margin-bottom: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 140%; font-family: Arial; color: #000000;\">&#8220;And finally, an instruction for teachers that is just plain common sense when it comes to students who learn differently. Students who struggle to learn in a formal classroom environment invariably know why and what they need.
